On the occasion of APEC leaders summit, which opened on November 5 in Da Nang, Vietnam, Asia Centre dedicates a special issue of its analysis review Asia Trends to security issues in the Asia Pacific region. Whether it be the North Korean nuclear issue or the various border disputes between regional actors, the latest events revealed the weaknesses of the regional security architecture and the deficiencies of the multilateral cooperation and dialogue mechanisms. The debate on the new regional equilibrium has been particularly intense, as it seems to shift in favour of an assertive China and at the expense of an ambiguous if not incoherent American policy. While the security environment in Asia raises many uncertainties, key meetings of November 2017, starting by President Trump’s visit to Asia from November 3 to 14, generate very high expectations.
